About

The Brown Foundation Inc., is committed to a flexible grantmaking strategy focused on Houston’s evolving community needs.

Our History

After building Brown & Root into a successful enterprise, Herman and Margarett Root Brown and George R. and Alice Pratt Brown founded The Brown Foundation, Inc., in 1951. The Brown brothers were builders, and they used philanthropy to build stronger educational, cultural, and civic institutions in Houston and beyond. Over its nearly 75-year history, The Brown Foundation has distributed more than $2 billion in grants across the state of Texas.

Today, the Trustees of The Brown Foundation are entrusted with the responsibility of carrying forward the philanthropic legacy of the founders: to create opportunity by supporting education; to uplift the spirit through the arts; to strengthen communities through direct service; and to enrich life through shared civic assets.

Our Approach to Philanthropy

Community-driven:

At the Brown Foundation, we believe that the true experts and catalysts for meaningful social change are those closest to the communities they serve. We aim to amplify organizations with a proven track record of success and invest in ideas with the potential to create positive change across Houston, Texas.

Grantees in the spotlight:

Since its inception, humility has been a core value that drives our work at the Brown Foundation. We intentionally refrain from using social media and/or seeking media attention for our grantmaking.
Our goal is not to seek the spotlight but rather leverage our platform and network within the philanthropic space to foster connections and elevate the impact of our grantees.

Responsive and Flexible:

Our grantmaking is rooted in the foundation’s key focus areas—Education, Arts & Culture, Human Services, Healthcare, and Civic Assets. However, we embrace a flexible approach, ensuring that all excellent ideas may be considered.  We strive to be transparent and responsive in our interactions with grantees and grant-seekers.

Our Team

Our team is passionate about our mission to build stronger, more vibrant communities in Houston, and we are proud to sustain operating support for organizations to meet that goal. As a part of the Foundation’s remarkable philanthropic legacy, we are honored to help support more than 250 diverse nonprofit organizations.
